This sword is an interesting patent solid hilt Highland officers broadsword blade specially made for Colonel Wood, Xth Hussars. Usually an 1821 pattern blade is fitted but on this occasion due to his experience in the Afghan War of 1878-79 where he was nearly killed, (see above London Illustrated News for the incident) he decided to have another sword made on his return to England which would be very strong for active service, hence the double insurance of a Patent Solid Hilt marrying a very wide sword broadsword blade favoured by the Highlanders.
